BC Fire Code Smoke Alarm Changes A recent legislative change to the BC Fire Code requires that every residential building built before March 31, 1979 shall have a smoke alarm installed by May 1, 2010 . This new law applies to every private home, suites within apartment buildings and sleeping rooms such as those found in hotels or motels. Owners of these buildings are permitted to install battery operated smoke alarms rather than having smoke alarms that are connected to the building's electrical system. The smoke alarms should be installed as per the manufacturer's instructions. Battery-operated alarms are an affordable way to improve safety. Landlords are to ensure that their rental properties comply with the law. Tenants are asked to contact their landlord immediately if they do not have the required smoke alarms or the smoke alarm provided is not working. These changes to the BC Fire Code increase public safety and awareness by utilizing this cost effective device. They help to assist in saving lives, preventing injury and minimizing property damage cause by fires in older residential buildings. Homeowners are reminded that it is important to test smoke alarms, and most municipalities have bylaws on installation and maintenance.
